Driving instructions to Lorenzos
rental houses in Montefrio, Granada, Andalucia, Spain
Official road maps do not show many of the
new connections for reaching this remote area of Andalucia,
and you will save time and trouble by following my written
instructions.
If you aren't travelling by car, buses from Granada leave
at 12.30 (noon) and 7.30 pm, from the Estación de Autobuses de Granada.
Return from Montefrio at 6.50 am and 2.45 pm. Reduced service on
Sundays, from Montefrio at 2.45pm and from Granada at 7.30 pm only.
You can take a taxi from Granada to Montefrio for about 60 euros.
Check-in time is from 4.00 pm.
You can arrive late in the evening, but should call me first
so that I can inform my assistants. We cannot attend to guests arriving
before 4pm. unless they call the day before to arrange for
this service.
When you get to Montefrio,
following the instructions below (depending on where you are coming from), drive to the Plaza de la
Iglesia, the junction with the great round church ("the
pressure cooker"). Park here and use the phone booth
next to the church (or your cell phone) to call my manager's cell phone at
680 383240 (if no answer, try again a few times because the local system sometimes fails). Simply say Estamos en la Plaza,
vamos a la Casa de... (give the name of your cottage). The
manager will come to get you in 15-20 minutes. (Take note of the manager's number in case you are in need of help during
your stay).
From Malaga Airport
Leaving the
airport, drive in the direction of MALAGA, crossing the fly-over
(overpass), which will put you in the direction of Malaga. On
the main road towards Malaga, you pass a gas station on your
right, and then pass an exit which you DO NOT TAKE (Attention:
there is a large vertical sign for ANTEQUERA which is
deceptively placed just a few yards beyond this first exit
ramp, leading some first-timers to take it). About 300 m feet
after the gas station you will cross a river on a rather long
bridge; immediately after crossing, take the exit RONDA DE
MALAGA / ANTEQUERA /
GRANADA.
You must now
drive around the back of the city of Malaga, on the ring road
(beltway) known as the "Ronda de Malaga"; you
should stay on this road for about 10 km. Take the exit
ANTEQUERA / GRANADA.
Continue in
the direction of GRANADA. After about 40 minutes of driving,
take the exit VILLANUEVA DE MESIA. (Caution: you will pass
exits for three other villages bearing the name VILLANUEVA,
you want "de Mesia"). Go through the town of
Villanueva de Mesia, continue straight ahead for 20 km to
the village of El Tocón. Drive around the public garden,
turn right at the church, go down the main street until you
get to the junction with the gas station/petrol pump, where
you turn left following the sign MONTEFRIO.
Driving time
from Malaga, 1½ hours.
From Madrid Airport
Leave the
airport and head towards Madrid. Get on the M-40 beltway,
direction VALENCIA. This will take you clockwise around
Madrid, from the 2 o'clock to the 6 o'clock position where
you take the N-IV south, direction CORDOBA. Stay as far to
the left of the road as you can, because there are several
lanes and you won't have much time to get over to the far
left when you see the exit sign.
Take this
exit and you will be on the only road going south - drive
straight ahead for about three hours in the direction of Jaen-Granada.
At this point, you will come to the city of Bailén,
where the motorway divides in a fork - West to Cordoba and
Seville, and South to Jaen and Granada. Take the direction Jaén/Granada.
About 40 km after passing Jaén you will see a small exit
sign for Campotejar. Take this exit. Go all the way down the
ramp in the direction of CAMPOTEJAR. You will pass a gas
station/petrol pump on your left; keep going until you reach a T-shaped
junction where you turn right for
Alcalá La Real. Follow the highway to the town of Alcalá,
turning left at the first main signposted intersection. This
will put you on the main street of the town, where you turn
left again. Drive down the main street several blocks until
you come to an intersection with the sign MONTEFRIO pointing
to the right.
Driving time
from Madrid, 5-6 hours.
When returning to Madrid, get
on the M-40 again to get to Barajas Airport. Go in the
direction of VALENCIA and then follow the signs with the
airport symbol.

Campotéjar
From Granada
Take
direction MALAGA-CORDOBA. When leaving the town on the Malaga
road, take the exit for CORDOBA. Drive in the direction of
Cordoba for about half an hour, until you reach the village
of PUERTO LOPE. Drive through the village. Just after leaving
the village, take the road on the left to MONTEFRIO. In
Montefrio, drive straight down through the village, without
turning left or right (there are no truly straight streets
here, so take the straightest direction possible), until you
come to the Plaza with the large round church standing on it
(don't confuse the round church with another monument, the
oblong-shaped El Pósito, in front of which there is also a
phone booth, and which you will pass on your right just after
entering the village).
Driving time
from Granada, 1 hour.
From Alicante
Direction
GRANADA. When the motorway reaches Granada, take exit for
CORDOBA. Drive in the direction of Cordoba for about half an
hour, until you reach the village of PUERTO LOPE. Drive
through the village. Just after leaving the village, take the
road on the left to MONTEFRIO. In Montefrio, drive straight
down through the village, without turning left or right (there
are no truly straight streets here, so go as straight as you
can), until you come to the Plaza with the large round church
standing on it.
From Seville
Direction
Antequera-Granada. Stay in the direction of GRANADA. After
driving for several hours, take the exit VILLANUEVA DE MESIA.
(Attention: before you get to this exit, you will pass three
other exits for villages bearing the name VILLANUEVA - you
want "de Mesia"). Go through the town of Villanueva
de Mesia, continue straight ahead for 20 km to the village
of El Tocón. Drive around the public garden, turn right at
the church, go down the main street until you get to the
junction with the gas station, where you turn left following
the sign MONTEFRIO.
Driving time
from Seville, less than 3 hours.
From Cordoba
Direction
Granada, exit at Alcalá La Real, at the top of the exit ramp
turn right for MONTEFRIO. When you reach Montefrio, drive
past the gas station/petrol pump on your right. The road then curves to
the left, and then to the right (over a bridge) and then uphill, putting you on the main street of Montefrio, where it slopes
steeply downwards. You will come to the Plaza with the large
round church standing on it.
Driving time
from Cordoba, 2 hours.
